Mivi Enters Smartphones with Mivi One

MIndian consumer technology company Mivi is stepping into one of the country’s most competitive technology categories with the announcement of Mivi One, its first smartphone.

The launch marks a significant diversification for a company that has spent the past decade building its identity around personal and home audio products including true wireless earbuds, headphones, neckbands, speakers and soundbars.

With Mivi One, the Hyderabad-based homegrown technology brand now wants to extend its product development, research, engineering and manufacturing capabilities into smartphones.

The new smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G mobile platform and will be sold through Flipkart in India.

While Mivi has yet to reveal the complete specifications, pricing and commercial launch timeline of Mivi One, the announcement provides a clear indication of the company’s larger ambition: transforming itself from an audio-focused brand into a multi-category Indian consumer technology company.

Mivi One to Bring Snapdragon 5G Performance

One of the major highlights confirmed for Mivi One is the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G mobile platform.

According to Mivi, the smartphone is being developed around the requirements of Indian consumers, with performance, connectivity, design and value expected to be important elements of its positioning.

The company has also highlighted strategic relationships with Qualcomm, Google and Flipkart as it enters the smartphone ecosystem.

Mivi claims that its upcoming device will stand out within the market segment it plans to target through its Snapdragon-powered 5G proposition.

However, details about the exact Snapdragon processor, RAM and storage configurations, display technology, cameras, battery capacity and charging capabilities have not yet been disclosed.

These specifications will ultimately play an important role in determining how aggressively Mivi One can compete with established smartphone players.

From Earbuds and Soundbars to Smartphones

The smartphone announcement represents a major strategic shift for Mivi.

Over the last decade, the company has primarily competed in India’s fast-growing consumer audio market. Its portfolio today includes TWS earbuds, neckbands, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers and soundbars.

Behind this portfolio, Mivi has also been investing in domestic product development and manufacturing infrastructure, including its manufacturing ecosystem in Hyderabad.

The company now intends to leverage this experience while building smartphone capabilities.

This is significant because entering the smartphone market requires substantially broader competencies ranging from hardware engineering and software integration to supply-chain management, after-sales support, operating-system optimisation and long-term product lifecycle management.

Mivi’s ability to translate its experience in audio electronics into these areas will therefore be closely watched.

Mivi Wants to Build a Global Technology Brand From India

Mivi Co-founder Viswanadh Kandula described smartphones as the next stage in the company’s evolution.

“The first decade of Mivi was about proving that an Indian company could build, design and manufacture consumer technology for discerning Indian consumers. Smartphones are the natural next steps in that journey,” Kandula said.

He added that the company wants to develop similar end-to-end capabilities for smartphones within India.

According to Kandula, Mivi One represents more than the introduction of a new device.

“Mivi One is not just our first smartphone; it is the first expression of our ambition to build a global consumer technology company from India,” he said.

That ambition could place Mivi among a growing group of Indian technology companies attempting to build greater domestic capabilities across electronics design, manufacturing and product development.

Mivi Targets Young and Aspirational Smartphone Buyers

The Indian smartphone market has evolved considerably over the last several years.

Consumers, particularly younger buyers, increasingly expect features such as strong processors, 5G connectivity, premium-looking designs, capable cameras, reliable batteries and smooth software experiences even at increasingly competitive price points.

Mivi Chief Business Officer Himanshu Tandon believes this changing consumer behaviour creates an opportunity for the company.

“The smartphone consumer today is far more discerning. Performance, design, reliability and value are no longer trade-offs, particularly for the young, aspirational Indian consumer,” Tandon said.

He said Mivi does not view smartphones simply as another product category.

Instead, the company wants to build a differentiated smartphone business around its understanding of Indian consumers, domestic product development and its ability to operate as a challenger brand.

Mivi One Will Be Available on Flipkart

Mivi has also confirmed that Mivi One will be launched through Flipkart.

The partnership gives the new smartphone access to one of India’s largest online commerce and smartphone distribution ecosystems.

For an entrant into the highly competitive smartphone business, nationwide online availability can be particularly important in reaching buyers beyond major metropolitan markets.

Mukund Kedia, Senior Director at Flipkart, said the Indian digital consumer is increasingly discovering homegrown brands offering differentiated products and competitive value propositions.

He said Mivi’s entry into smartphones represents a natural extension of the consumer equity created through its existing audio portfolio.

Flipkart will provide digital commerce reach and logistics support for the upcoming smartphone.

Can Mivi Challenge Established Smartphone Brands?

The bigger question will emerge once the company announces the Mivi One price and complete specifications.

India’s smartphone market is intensely competitive, with buyers having numerous choices across practically every price bracket.

For Mivi One to establish meaningful market share, the company will need to deliver on several fronts simultaneously — specifications, software experience, camera performance, battery life, product quality, pricing and after-sales service.

Its existing brand awareness in consumer electronics could provide Mivi with an initial advantage compared with a completely new smartphone entrant.

Domestic R&D and manufacturing capabilities may also become a differentiator if they allow the company to respond quickly to Indian market requirements.

But smartphones represent a substantially more complex category than wireless audio accessories.

The real test will therefore come when Mivi reveals exactly what Mivi One offers consumers and, most importantly, at what price.

The Bigger Picture

Mivi One is noteworthy not simply because another smartphone is entering the Indian market.

Its importance lies in what the product represents for Mivi.

The company is attempting to transition from being primarily recognised as an Indian audio electronics brand into a broader consumer technology player capable of developing increasingly complex devices.

If Mivi successfully builds an attractive smartphone around performance, competitive pricing and a reliable user experience, Mivi One could open a much larger growth opportunity for the company.

For now, attention will turn to the next announcement — the Mivi One specifications, price in India and official sale date.

Those details will determine whether Mivi’s smartphone ambitions can translate into a serious new challenger in India’s crowded mobile market.
